A short history of Mother's Day.

Although in the modern sense it originates in the USA in the early 20th century, there have been celebrations that honour mothers throughout the centuries. 

This celebration is largely credited to a woman called Anna Jarvis, an activist who established the day to celebrate her own mother. She was also someone who worked tirelessly to promote better health and sanitation conditions for mothers and children during the Civil War era.

The first official Mother's Day celebration was on May 10, 1908 and designed to honour all mothers for their contributions to society. Eventually it became a national holiday in 1914, the same year that the First World War ended. 

As the holiday became more commercialised, Anna Jarvis became disillusioned with the direction Mother's Day was taking. She believed the holiday should be about expressing love and gratitude to one's mother through personal gestures. She even lobbied to have it removed from the calendar. 

Fortunately, Mother's Day continued to grow in popularity and is now celebrated in many countries around the world, although the date may vary.
